Photos and words by Kit Oates

“The motorcycle of choice in Tanzania is the Toyo, an affordable Chinese import. These cheap cycles began making an appearance in 2010, and at a thousand dollars each offer a new means of transport in low income rural areas. Toyo riders provide a valuable service to the community, ferrying people to and from places for a small fee. Bikes are able to traverse rough rural terrain and narrow paths to villages that a car would have trouble reaching.”

“Toyo riders are known for their carefree attitude and adorn their bikes with scarfs, flags and other trinkets. Public opinion of the bikers is mixed, and riders convene on street corners to find work and socialize.”
